The New California Cuisine Cookbook by Rose Dosti (1987)

As Los Angeles Times food columnist Dosti (author of Tastemaker winner Middle Eastern Cooking amply demonstrates in this sampling of signature dishes of resident professional chefs, New California Cooking reflects the region’s bounteous fresh foods and ethnic diversity. At Michael’s restaurant, the traditional Italian appetizer of carpaccio is served with a Japanese twist when tuna, sliced paper-thin, is substituted for beef; ahi carpaccio is light and easy to prepare. Pasta with Szechuan spiced shrimp, created by Bob Brody of the Sheraton Harbor Island West in San Diego, marries Italian pasta with shrimp and spicy Chinese seasonings; and the gourmet deli Pasta Etc. offers il nido dolce, a nest of chocolate-flavored pasta cradling chocolate eggs filled with pastry cream. This cookbook dazzles the senses with 100 ravishing color photos of raw produce and such artfully arranged, imaginative delights as fillet mosaic with red-pepper sauce and three-color tamales with beluga butter.

This hardcover book with dust jacket is in excellent condition. ISBN-13: 9780810912939

Price: $2.99

Vineyard by Andy Katz & Joy Sterling (1998)

It may be something about the number of grapes that get crushed, the days on the vine, the sun, or the rain, but there is a certain alchemy that takes place in the production of a bottle of wine, an alchemy that is noticeable in just one sip from any very good bottle.

In Vineyard, Andy Katz and Joy Sterling have captured this alchemy with their own talents in photographs and words. Beginning with a history of wine in California, where the most popular American wines are grown, Joy Sterling describes the precarious nature of life in the vineyard — concerns about daily variations in weather, maintaining hope through difficult seasons, and the irony in the difficulty of handling a harvest that is larger than expected.

Sterling’s expressive epigrams of seasons, philosophies, and perspectives of growing wine in California are accompanied by Andy Katz’s crystalline photographs of vineyards in sunlight and rain, shadow and fog, abundance and rest. His photos capture the density in the light, the texture in the leaves, and the moisture in the air.

Anyone who has ever visited California will be charmed by this stunning year-round representation of the vineyards, and those who haven’t will be captivated by the sheer beauty and poetry in its vistas.

With its exquisite design, warm descriptions of vineyard life, and crystalline photos, this inviting book leads readers through an illustrative and informative tour of wine making in the beautiful setting of Sonoma Country. 60 full-color photos.

A loving portrait of the yearly life cycle of a California vineyard written with intelligence, lyricism and passion. Joy Sterling and Andy Katz have captured the magic of nature and drama of wind in the pages of this beautiful book.

This hard cover book with dust jacket is in excellent condition. The book came from a library sale so it has an extra protective sleeve over the dust jacket. It has a small Dewey Decimal number tag on the bottom of the spine and a library barcode sticker on the inside front cover. ISBN-13: 9780684839301

One of the most acclaimed and innovative cooks in her field returns with more than 100 easy, flavorful, low-fat recipes–each of which calls for no more than six easy-to-find ingredients.

Jane Butel’s Tex-Mex Cookbook is a classic, and here Butel presents new recipes for her favorite food, from Lamb Chops with Jalapeno Jelly to Green Chile Corn Chowder. Most of the recipes are made with five ingredients or fewer and can be prepared in under 20 minutes.

Some, designated “Sunday Best” recipes, do call for a few more, but even these are simple. The recipes are lower in fat than those in Butel’s earlier cookbooks, and nutrition analyses are included for each.
